PHYSICAL AND DESCRIPTIVE GEOGRAPHY

  1. Ireland was divided into two countries in 1921 - the Republic of Ireland (also called just Ireland), an independent country, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.
  2. The island is in general level, with mountains along the coast.

  4. Its climate is mild and moist, and in the early 1900s, the people were chiefly engaged in grazing and agriculture.

  8. As of 2020, Ireland has a population of around 4.9 million. Northern Ireland has a population of around 1.8 million.
  9. Bog-peat is commonly used for fuel. Coal, which is imported, is used only in the towns.

HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY

  1. The name Ireland was originally Ir or Erin. It was called Hibernia by the Romans. It is sometimes called the Emerald Isle, because of the freshness of its verdure.
  2. Ireland was long governed by its own kings, princes, or chieftains; its four provinces, Ulster, Leinster, Munster, and Connaught. were former kingdoms.
  3. From the 3rd to the 10th century it was ruled by a tribe called the Scots, who called it Scotia, but afterwards transferred the name to Scotland.
  4. Invasions and insurrections were frequent, and the country finally fell into the hands of the English.
  5. Many of its people have a Celtic heritage.
